Presently I'm working on my Ph.D. thesis at the Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto FEUP, whose title is the following:
"Applicability, Usability and Assessment of Natural User Interfaces for Elders"
The use of traditional input devices such as keyboards and mice can become a huge obstacle for older adults in interacting with computer systems. NUI’s use natural interactions of humans with real objects, namely through paradigms such as multi-touch, gestures, speech, facial expression, eye-gazing, etc.. Using Natural User Interfaces (NUI’s), more specifically using gestures or movements on a multi-touch device, can be a good alternative to replace traditional input devices. The multi-touch and gesture-based devices are becoming more widespread, and show a high potential of being easily adopted in several application domains where these technologies can be exploited, as is the case of elderly people group. Through this thesis proposal, it is proposed to study the applicability, usability and assessment of NUI’s applied to specific domain of the elders users, taking into consideration the design challenges of the new interfaces, with a particular focus on multi-touch and gesture-based technologies.
